Chatham This Week - Seminar Notice

Charlene Roy enjoyed singing, but the constant strain on her vocal chords meant the discomfort of a sore throat.

She decided to do something about it and now sings much better than she ever has.

Roy travelled to North York last month to attend a 10-hour seminar at The Royans School For The Musical Performing Arts. So impressed with the coaching of Diana Yampolsky, a certified director and master vocal coach, Roy wanted to share her experience with local singers in Chatham-Kent.

She has invited the vocal coach to Chatham-Kent who has agreed to come down if there are enough students to teach. Roy is hoping Yampolsky's list of credentials will draw interest.

A certified director from the Leningrad School of Music, Yampolsky opened her music school in 1984 and developed the Royans Revolutionary Vocal Technique - Vocal Science. The technique teaches special exercises which enable the singer to meet any combination of pitch and duration of sound. It's been proven to extend vocal range and clarity, increase vocal power and volume and prevent vocal chord nodes. And it alleviates the strain on vocal chords - a benefit for Roy.

"I practised with the church choir for three hours and I didn't have as much strain on my throat," said Roy. "I feel I have this knowledge and I can apply it when I'm singing."

Roy's singing was videotaped before and after the seminar and the results were "amazing".

"To actually see an improvement in 10 hours was amazing to me," she said.

The seminar is for anyone interested in improving their singing - whether they be in a church choir, school choir, perform publicly, or just want to enhance their singing. Roy asks that interested people call her at 351-9023 by April 9, as space will be limited. The seminar is planned over three days, beginning April 24 and continuing through to April 26.
