Book Review: Vocal Science - Flight to the Universe.
- Written by Christina Grant, Canadian Music Educator magazine
As a vocalist, I have often been overwhelmed by the many interconnecting elements involved in a single performance. What I appreciate most about this book was that it provides an overview of many key issues relevant for the emerging vocalist. It is especially unique in its attempt to encompass the vocal music demands of popular music.
Diana Yampolsky sets out to dispel several myths about vocal technique and to make assertions about appropriate technique based on her years of experience. The simple explanation about the physiological reasons for her assertions are helpful; as a music educator, and as a researcher, I would have appreciated references to other reading that also support her position.
The author provides a quick overview of the issues surrounding physical and emotional well-being, and the role these play in being able to successfully connect with an audience. A detailed and specific account of these strategies and their applications would be of great interest to me both as an educator, and as a performer. I found the section on herbal alternatives for vocal care particularly informative. Several herbal products are recommended for specific concerns.
The author speaks from her personal experience, sharing the story of her personal journey as it has influenced her current practice. The narrative style is easy to follow and provides an introductory glance at issues of particular relevance to singers establishing themselves in the various popular music traditions.
